Recycling the memories

Mathematics and recycling – two of our traditional strengths.

I found this wrapped around something else as padding and I am taken back to the ‘dista khata’ or exercise books my parents made up for me to do sums on at home. The quality of the reams of paper was poor, the needle was big enough to be used on elephant hide and the ball of twine always found after much searching! It never occurred to me to question why we went to the trouble of making these enormous exercise books up; it was something they had done in their childhood and it continued.
